Pravikova Liudmila

I have been working at Pyatigorsk State Linguistic University since 1984 and have taught courses in Sociolinguistics, Pragmalinguistics, Introduction to Cognitive Linguistics, Argumentation Theory, etc. My doctorate dissertation was defended in 2006. I was a Fulbrighter (2000-2001, Washington D.C.) and a Kennan-Fulbrighter Scholar (2010-2011 - Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars, Washinton D.C.).
My professional interests lie in the research domains of “language and society” and “language and culture”, especially in the issues of sociology and ecology of languages, critical discourse analysys and the language of politics. One of major directions of my research is the domain of North Caucasus languages functioning.
My recent work has explored the features of the linguistic picture of the North Caucasus and the findings were presented in some national and international publications and at various professional meetings across the country and abroad. I was an active participant of the Federal program "Peace in North Caucasus through languages, education, and culture" and launched the working group on saving minority and maintaining majority languages of Russia, particularly in the area of the North Caucasus.
I have published more than 80 scientific articles, theses, monographs in Russian and English, and I am editor-in-chief of more than 5 collections of articles.
My project deals with the analysis of influence of modern technologies on the maintenance of languages of the North Caucasus. As language matters lie in the foundation of human existence, the study of issues touched upon in my project would be very important for the solution of interethnic and interlingual differences in the North Caucasus. The project will help recognize the high dependence of linguistic issues on cultural, social and political habitus of people and employment of technological innovations. It will open new perspectives for ethnolinguapolitical theory of minorities as a whole and help see anew the problems of the North Caucasus, the important geopolitical spot.
